This course is offered to students who have failed a HS English class during the school year. To be eligible students must have scored between 50 – 59% for the semester. Students can take the course to make up 5% or 10% of their semester grade depending on their situation. The course is comprised of reading both fiction, and non-fiction, grammar, speaking, and writing. Students must complete all assignments and are required to attend class on June 11 from 8-12 and their scheduled exit interview. The class will be graded as pass/fail

You will be using An O. Henry Reader by O. Henry to choose the short stories you would like to read for this course. After reading each short story you will need to complete the online questionnaire.
You must also answer the thinking it over questions for each story and submit your answers in digital format to Mrs. Trader.

Newspaper Articles – non-fiction – TURN IN AT EXIT INTERVIEW
Focuses on Common Core Reading and Writing Standards
5-10% - 2 Newspaper Articles
Before you schedule your exit interview with Mrs. Trader you must have chosen 2 newspaper articles of acceptable length and topic. Before you read the newspaper article answer the following questions for each article in 6 – 9 sentences total.

What do I know?
What do I wonder?
Read the article and identify the main idea with 2 supporting details and then answer the following questions in 6-9 sentences total.
How was I right?
How was I wrong?
What did I learn?
A copy of each article along with your written responses to the pre-reading, post-reading questions and main topic supporting details must be turned in at your exit interview.

Writing – ONLINE
Focuses on Common Core Writing Standards
5% - 4 Journal Entries
10% - 8 Journal Entries
Journal entries must be a minimum of 15 sentences and 3 paragraphs.
Journal entries must include:
Persuasive (take a strong stance on something)
Narrative (tell me a story)
Informative (educate me on something)
Daily/Summary (tell me about your week/day/vacation)

Grammar – TURN IN AT EXIT INTERVIEW
Focuses on Common Core Language Standards
You will be given a packet of grammar/punctuation review worksheets at our initial meeting. This packet of worksheets should be completed and turned in at your exit interview.

Speaking – Perform at EXIT INTERVIEW
Focuses on Common Core Speaking & Listening Standards
Create a product/commercial – present/perform commercial at exit interview
You will be graded on:
Product – Does it meet a need?
Preparation – Are you ready to go?
Persuasion – Should I buy the product?
Professionalism – How well did you prepare and present?
Performance – Eye contact, sincerity, pitch, visual aids
Commercial should be no more than 90 seconds in length and should be fast-paces. Use of words like um../ah.. will cause you to be downgraded. No notes – but you may use a cue card.
